A Quick Look at Some of the Famous Logo Redesigns of 2016
2016 turned out to be a popular year for logo redesigns! Several very well recognized companies made changes to their brand anchors and identities. In some cases these updates involved complete design overhauls, while others simply made minor adjustments to their existing logos.
I’m not going to touch on the comprehensive scope of some of the major redesigns, but I do want to share with you some of the highlights from this year’s logo redesigns! If you’re interested in knowing more about any of the rebrands, I’ve included links to more extensive articles.
Instagram’s simplistic new logo translates the iconic characteristics of the original skeuomorphic design into a brighter, two dimensional glyph that represents the energy and vibrancy of the brand.
“We wanted to create a look that would represent the community’s full range of expression — past, present, and future…After a lot of refinement, we landed on a glyph that still suggests a camera, but also sets the groundwork for years to come.” Instagram
CVS’ updated name and logo reflects their mission to provide innovative health and lifestyle support, and unites the companies four previously used service names (CVS/pharmacy, CVS/specialty, CVS/minute clinic and CVS/caremark) under one name.
“By serving as the cornerstone of a powerful story that comes to life millions of times a day across the country, the CVS Health Heart stands as a bold new symbol for the changing face of healthcare.” CVS
The Peace Corps’ new logo reaches forward to engage and inspire upcoming generation, while still honoring the agency’s heritage and mission.
“The new brand identity is rooted in this vibrant legacy, connects with new audiences and positions the Peace Corps’ mission-driven brand for future generations” Peace Corps
Netflix introduced a ribbon style “N” icon to use alongside of their logo. The icon was specifically developed to be quickly and easily recognizable as a social media avatar and in mobile apps where space is limited.
“We are introducing a new element into our branding with an N icon. The current Netflix logo will still remain, and the icon will start to be incorporated into our mobile apps along with other product integrations in the near future.” Netflix
Uber’s challenge in rebranding their company was to find a globally recognizable brand image that could be flexible enough to engage and resonate with the huge variety of cultures they work with.
“The number one cultural value at Uber is “Celebrate Cities.” For us, that means doing everything we can to make people around the world feel like we were born in the place they call home…At the same time, building a globally recognizable brand still requires common elements people can associate with you…Our new identity was designed specifically to solve for this complex challenge.”
“The cornerstone of our brand identity is the new logo—it’s the main component that ties every touchpoint to the Uber brand. We’ve always felt there was a cognitive dissonance between who we were deep down and how we expressed ourselves through our logo. The simplicity of the new logo denotes quality and elegance, while the combination of straight and curved lines convey both the confidence and approachability of our updated look.” Uber
Pandora’s new wordmark logo and background “lights” are designed to convey the energy and atmosphere of a live performance, and represent the flow of music from artists and composers to the audiences who love them.
“Our goal with the logo and app icon is to honor our past while looking to the future with a bolder, more modern identity.” Pandora
MasterCard’s simplified logo reflects a modern style, but is close enough to the original to maintain the valuable equity of brand recognition built up over decades.
“To thrive in this new digital world where business moves faster than ever, we want to modernize and elevate the brand in a design that is simple and elegant, yet unquestionably Mastercard.” Mastercard
